The door locks of your home are the first line of defense when it comes to home security. When you buy a new home you have to assume that the old owners, their family/friends, the Realtor, and maybe even contractors all possibly have a key to your new property. Rekeying the locks are a great way to ensure that your home is secured, and is relatively inexpensive compared to changing the locks.
What does rekeying a lock mean?
When we rekey locks, it simply means to change the pin tumbler. This tumbler inside the cylinder of the lock and uses pins of various length to keep to lock from being opened unless you have the right key. We rekey the tumbler of the pre-existing lock so it will accept a new key, the process is relatively simple. First, we replace some of the lock pins found in the cylinder, this will change the tumbler. Next, we cut new keys that will open your rekeyed lock. Once the lock has been rekeyed, the old keys will no longer work.
Why should you rekey your home's locks?
You may decide to have your locks rekeyed for many reasons, including:
- Moving into a new home. It would not be a wise decision to trust the former owners, tenants, and landlords have turned it all copies of the keys and will not misuse the access to your home. Rekeying your locks will ensure your home is secure and you're the only one with the keys.
- Rekey locks anytime someone moves out of your home. If you have a roommate who is moving out, you don’t know how many keys he/she had made or who has those keys. It is extremely important for your locks to be rekeyed so they no longer have access to your home and possessions.
- If someone misplaces a key or has it stolen. Having a key to your home unaccounted for means less peace of mind. Rekeying is a cheaper option than changing the locks and is just as secure.
- Having a fallout with someone that had a copy of your key. Unfortunately, friendships and other relationships break up. If you have given a backup key to someone that you no longer have a trusting relationship with, we encourage you to rekey all your locks and have new keys cut.
