When you buy a new car, your auto dealer hands you the shiny new keys and sends you out to the open road. But how often do we forget to make a copy of that key? Here’s how that little bit of forethought can save you a huge headache down the road.

1. Locking your keys in the car.

Unless you have a smart key that makes it impossible to lock your keys in the car, it happens to the best of us—your doors lock automatically, or you manually push down the locking mechanism and before you have the chance to think about it, you close the door, turn around, and see your keys through the car window. If you don’t have a spare, you will have to call us to gain access. If you have a spare, you can have someone bring it to you or catch a ride home to retrieve it. Either way, time and money will be saved.

2. Losing the keys to your car.

We all know that when looking for your keys, they're always in the last place you look! However, sometimes you just can't find that place. When your keys have been lost or stolen, make sure you can still get to where you need to be by using a backup set that you've had made for situations just like this.

3. Copying your keys is so much easier than making new ones.

If you’ve lost or damaged a car key, making a new one is much easier if you have one that a locksmith can duplicate. If you have a spare, a locksmith can use the shape to create a new copy in a matter of minutes. However, if you don’t have a spare, a skilled locksmith can still recreate the key, but at a much higher cost and time commitment.

4. Your smart key battery goes dead.

Need another reason? How about those with smart keys and your remote's battery that goes dead? Let's face it, most of us don't have smart key batteries laying around. It is also possible that a remote will need re-programmed after a battery has been replaced. Having a spare allows you to continue using your vehicle until you can get your original re-programmed with a new battery.

If you need a spare standard key, smart key, or even a remote for your car in the Tampa Bay area, give us a call at (813) 545-5462 and we can make it for you!
